First place at DxOMark. How much does it cost to become a camera leader?

Over the past few years, various benchmarks have been discredited in the eyes of the user due to the fact that the numbers of AnTuTu, Geekbench and others do not always reflect the real situation in games and resource-intensive applications. Nevertheless, Chinese manufacturers from time to time still boast of high numbers in synthetic tests, substantiating the advantages of new products over their predecessors and competitors.

First place at DxOMark. How much does it cost to become a camera leader?

Measuring the camera capabilities of modern gadgets looks even stranger. But here there is not much variety: the DxOMark ball rules. Despite the extremely dubious ratings and the methodology for compiling them, where there is simply no top score, and the evaluation criteria are very abstract, the efforts of many media DxOMark has become almost more popular than AnTuTu, although it was difficult to imagine this just recently. This is also used by vendors. In particular, Xiaomi has repeatedly recorded the result of DxOMark during the presentation as one of the indicators of the success of its work.

First place at DxOMark. How much does it cost to become a camera leader?

To illustrate how strange this rating is, we suggest you look at the current list of the best. Please note that Xiaomi “Mi CC9 Pro Premium” (aka Mi Note 10) is located above the iPhone 11 Pro Max, not to mention the Google Pixel 4, which is located on the “honorable” line 15, and the iPhone 11 does worse Mi 9 and barely hit the top twenty. If you dig even further, you can find the Pixel 3 (yes, the same Pixel 3, which did not leave anyone a chance for a whole year in terms of photos) was at the same level as the Redmi K20 Pro. To put it mildly debatable. Very, very mildly!

Many believe that the authors of this chart are simply simply “entered” to get into the news bulletins, because, as mentioned above, the media is actively circulating every new replenishment. Now on the Web there are some specifics. One of Weibo’s sources of accurate information on new products told how the process of “evaluating” the photo capabilities of gadgets actually takes place. In particular, he speaks of a certain “test contribution” in the amount of 100,000 euros (almost 6.9 million rubles). Only after paying for it, testing begins, according to which DxOMark gives its customers (you won’t call it otherwise) “recommendations” on what and where to fix it in the firmware (tighten focus, work on details and so on). Frames that have flaws, of course, do not fall into the material.

After that, the manufacturer makes changes and sends an update taking into account the wishes of DxOMark. In the “review”, however, a postscript appears that the smartphone was tested for software that is not accessible to users, that is, DxO as if demonstrates what the device is capable of with that set of hardware components, and not how this or that device will be photographed in hands at the end user. For example, a fresh report on Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro indicates that the tested firmware is scheduled for release on March 5, but promises to “check on a commercial sample and make sure that the results are identical.” Willingly believe!

Meanwhile, according to the informant, if the manufacturer does not make contact and refuses to pay the “test fee”, then DxOMark buys the gadget on its own and shows everything as it really is. Obviously, this is how the Pixel 3 ended up in the top ten, and the iPhone 11 Pro Max lost the CC9 Pro. That’s for sure “to friends – everything, and to enemies – the law”, as one famous dictator said.

In general, there is nothing seditious in such a practice: manufacturers can and should attract specialists to improve all the functions of their smartphones, which we will benefit from. Here are just the described scheme (if it really is, of which there are a few doubts, to be honest), rather, it is aimed not at improving the quality of photos and videos in new gadgets, but solely at marketing and PR. Otherwise, why all these estimates, each time ahead of the previous ones by 1-2 points, having already broken the mark of 120 points? Can such a selective approach be considered a fair assessment of the possibility of mobile devices? Definitely not! It’s funny that DxOMark is now also testing sound. That’s the truth: talented people are talented in everything!

P.S. Even before this “exposure”, we were skeptical of DxOMark ratings: materials based on their data are extremely rare in our country. We prefer to demonstrate the capabilities of smartphones privately, as part of a test of each individual device or a comparison of several smartphones with each other, indicating the pros and cons of each of them.
